Limahl on Strax Broadcast 20th March 2000

Transcript of a telephone interview broadcast on on Strax, a daily programme on Danish Radio station P3. The topic of the day was "Where are they now".

(Beginning of interview missing)

Limahl: ...when everything, you know, when the whole kind of '80s thing was over, I started producing and writing and I have a small recording studio in West London - and I was working with Kim Wilde and we did a couple of songs with Peter André..

Tina: We know him in Denmark.

Limahl: You know him... and Kim Appleby from Mel & Kim but I never really got the success as a writer and producer, and mixer that I had with Kajagoogoo and Limahl. And then in 1997 one of the big record companies in England released the first compilation '80s CD and it was a huge success. Then there was a second one and there was a third one and another company did another one and then suddenly there was all this interest in the '80s music again. And now I've been so busy as Limahl again - I'm even blonde - I'm blonde again!!

Tina: You've got the same haircut?

Limahl: Well it's a '90s version. You can see my new haircut at my website which is www.limahl.com. Nice and easy for you...

Tina: Do that!

Limahl: And, you know, it's like I'm very recognizable, you know, but it's like, it's a nice millenium version of the '80s cut, and people like that - I get the feeling that they like that coz we've all grown up together, we've all moved on, we can look back and laugh a little bit at some of the hair and clothes from the '80s.

Tina: What about the music that you're doing now, is that '80s inspired?

Limahl: I'm purely working gig-on-gigs and I'm performing retrospectively - I'm what we call a retro artist, so I am performing all over the world with this bloody song.. (Limahl laughs) I call it "That song". "Too Shy" normally but sometimes "Never Ending Story". That means, I just, you know, I'm going to Belgium, I toured Switzerland, I've just been in Copenhagen and I'm, you know, I'm doing lots of work in England and I've been on television in France and I've been gigging in France and I've been to the Middle East to Dubai and I did some great work there. I have a really nice band that I work with and I have a girl saxophone player who is gorgeous and I am really enjoying myself and I don't have the pressure that I must have a hit single, you know, I am not promoting any new product, I don't even have a record deal. However, there's a possibility that I will do something new soon. I have been approached by a company in Germany and they are talking to my lawyer, we'll see what happens.

Tina: Oh, so maybe we can hear something new from you?

Limahl: I hope so, because I'd really like to show everybody how good my voice is sounding, it actually, it's like a wine or champagne- it get's better with age.

Tina: Just like men does. But so far you've actually had to live the NeverEnding Story. The song is a Never Ending Story for you or what?

Limahl: Those two songs - people have great memories attached to those songs, you know, and music is amazing it can do that, you can hear a song from your childhood and it takes you right back there immediately. You know, I have songs when I hear them I always think of a certain holiday or a certain, you know, a certain thing I was doing, and I am really proud that I can have this nostalgia.

Tina: Well let's hear "Too shy shy". Would you give it a word?

Limahl: Too shy shy hush hush eye-to-eye

Tina: Exactly. Thank you very much, Limahl .

Limahl: No problem .

Tina: Have a nice skiing vacation.

Limahl: Thank you very much, I'll try to come back in one piece .
